Chris Schmidt is a candidate for the 2013 JSL Gala.

As the Chief Operating Officer of Flagler Hospital St. Augustine, Christopher Schmidt oversees the day-to-day operation of this 335-bed acute-care facility, which has been ranked among the top five percent in the nation for clinical excellence and patient safety for the past seven consecutive years. Prior to Flagler Hospital, Schmidt served as a Nurse Corps officer for the United States Navy in multiple areas of the world, including Japan and the western Pacific, Puerto Rico, the Horn of Africa, and, most recently, a 15-month deployment in Afghanistan. Schmidt retired in 2012 at the rank of Commander after 22 years of service. During his Naval career, Schmidt held a variety of positions in the medical field, including Emergency Department Director, Chief Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, Emergency Management Officer, Associate Director of Surgery, and Specialty Advisor for Emergency/Trauma Nursing to the Surgeon General of the Navy. Chris is a Board Certified Acute Care Nurse Practitioner and Emergency Nurse and has held national certifications in Paramedics and Flight Nursing, and national appointments with the Emergency Nurses Association. He has held clinical faculty positions at both the University of Maryland-Baltimore and the University of North Florida and also authored several research and book chapters in the emergency nursing field. Although a Florida native, Schmidt grew up a son of a Naval Officer and traveled the United States for 15 years, before calling Pensacola, Fla. his home. He is a graduate of Florida State University where he earned his BSN degree in 1990, as well as New Hampshire College and the University of Texas-Houston alumni where he received a master’s degree in Emergency Trauma Nursing and Specialization as an Emergency Nurse Practitioner. Schmidt and his wife Jules have been married for 22 years and have four children.
